If you’ve landed here, you’re ready to tackle one area of your home as part of the 500 Item Purge.
This simple decluttering challenge is all about letting go of the things that no longer serve your family, one small decision at a time. Despite the name, it’s not really about reaching 500 items, it’s about building momentum and creating a home that’s easier to clean, organize, and enjoy. If you’re new to the challenge, be sure to read the 500 Item Purge Overview first, where I’ll explain the philosophy behind the purge, share the benefits of owning less, and give you access to my free Decluttering Guide to help you confidently decide what stays and what goes. Then come back here, and let’s tackle this room together.
Bathroom Purge: Small Room, Big Difference
Bathrooms may be some of the smallest rooms in the house, but they can hide an incredible amount of clutter. Drawers fill with half-used products, cabinets become home to expired medications, and before you know it, you’re digging through bottles every morning just to find what you need.
Some clutter is obvious, expired medicine, old sunscreen, empty bottles, and makeup you’ve had for years. Other items are sneakier: hotel toiletries you’ve been saving, products you tried once and never liked, and enough hair ties to last a lifetime.
As I worked through our bathrooms, I kept asking myself one simple question: “Would I buy this again today?” If the answer was no, it went into the trash or recycling. Little by little, getting ready became quicker, cabinets stayed organized, and it was so much easier to keep the counters clean.
As you work through your own bathrooms, don’t overlook the little things like sample products, old toothbrushes, empty containers, and nearly-empty bottles you’ve been meaning to finish.
The goal isn’t to have perfectly styled bathroom shelves. It’s to have a bathroom stocked with products you actually use every day. ✌🏼
