How to Teach Number Bonds: Hands-On Activities for Building Addition Skills

HOW TO TEACH ADDITION with number bonds: FROM QUANTITIES TO EQUATIONS
When children first begin learning addition, we don’t want them to simply memorize that 3 + 4 = 7. We want them to understand what those numbers actually mean and why combining 3 and 4 results in 7. Before equations become abstract symbols on a page, children need opportunities to see numbers as quantities, understand how those quantities relate to one another, and physically or visually combine two parts to create a whole.
That’s where number bonds come in.
Number bonds give children a visual model for understanding the relationship between numbers. Two smaller numbers represent the parts, and those parts work together to create the whole. This Number Bond Practice activity offers several hands-on ways to explore that relationship using dominoes, dice, number cards, and counting cubes, giving children repeated practice with the same concept through different manipulatives and representations.
But just like most early math activities, there’s more than one way to use it. Depending on where your child is in their learning, the exact same activity can be used to practice number recognition, part-part-whole understanding, or early addition. Instead of constantly looking for a new activity, we can change the level of thinking we ask our children to do.
WHAT ARE NUMBER BONDS?
A number bond is a visual model that shows how two parts come together to make one whole. For example: 3 + 2 = 5. In a number bond, 3 and 2 are the parts, while 5 is the whole.
For young learners, this visual representation can make addition much more concrete. Instead of only seeing an equation like 3 + 2 = 5, children can count actual objects, identify the two groups, combine them, and connect what they see to the numbers in the number bond. And once they understand how parts combine to make a whole, we can reverse the process: start with the whole and break it apart into its parts. That ability to move back and forth between composing and decomposing numbers is an important foundation for flexible number sense.
How to Use the Number Bond Practice Activity
Start by choosing which version of the activity you’d like to use. Children can work with dominoes, dice, number cards, or counting cubes, giving them different hands-on ways to explore the same part-part-whole relationship. With each version, children identify the two quantities and record them as the parts in the first two circles of the number bond. Then, they determine what those two parts make together and record the total, or whole, in the final circle.
How independently your child completes that final step, and the strategies they use to get there, will depend on their current level of mathematical understanding. That’s where I like to think about the activity in three levels: Recognize, Understand, and Apply.

Learning Goal: I can recognize and read written numbers.
At the Recognize level, we aren’t worried about independently solving addition problems yet. Instead, we’re building the foundational skills children need to recognize numbers, count quantities, and connect what they see to the written numeral that represents it. Depending on which Number Bond Mat you’re using, that starting point can look a little different.
With the Dominoes Mat, children count the dots on each half of the domino and record each quantity in the corresponding circle. With the Dice Mat, they roll two dice, count the dots on each die, and record those numbers. With the Cut + Paste Number Cards Mat, children choose two number cards, identify each numeral, glue the cards into the squares, and copy the numbers into the corresponding circles of the number bond. No matter which version you choose, the goal is the same: identify a number or quantity and represent it with a written numeral.
For the dominoes and dice, encourage your child to touch or point to each dot as they count. This reinforces one-to-one correspondence while helping them understand that the final number they say represents the total quantity, or cardinality. Over time, they may begin recognizing familiar dot arrangements without needing to count each individual dot, another important step in developing number sense.
The number cards offer an added challenge because children begin with the abstract numeral rather than a visual quantity. Encourage children to determine each number using a variety of representations, such as different dice formations, tally marks, fingers, and numerals, so they learn to recognize quantities in multiple ways. If your child chooses a 5 but doesn’t yet understand what 5 represents, bring in a concrete manipulative. Count out five counting cubes, counters, pom-poms, or another small object together to connect the written numeral 5 to an actual quantity of five.
If your child doesn’t immediately recognize a numeral or accurately count a quantity, help them. Remember, the goal is to teach, not quiz. You might say, “You counted five dots. That quantity is five, and this is how we write the number 5.” Whether they begin with dots on a domino, dots on a die, or a written number card, repeated practice helps strengthen the connection between quantity, number name, and written numeral.

Learning Goal: I can identify two parts and understand that they combine to make a whole.
Once your child can identify the numbers or quantities they’re working with, the next step is understanding what those numbers are doing inside the number bond. We want children to recognize that the two numbers on the left aren’t simply numbers they’ve written in circles, they represent two separate quantities, or parts, that can be combined to create a whole.
With the Dominoes Mat, the two halves of the domino naturally show the two parts. With the Dice Mat, each die represents a separate part. With the Cut + Paste Number Cards Mat, the two chosen numbers represent the parts, and manipulatives can be used to make those written numbers concrete. No matter which version you’re using, bring your child’s attention to the same relationship: this is one part, this is another part, and together they make the whole.
For example, if the two parts are 2 and 4, have your child identify or count each quantity separately. With dominoes or dice, they can see and count the dots directly. With number cards, they can build each quantity using counting cubes, counters, pom-poms, or another manipulative. Then ask, “What happens when we put these two parts together?” Combine or count both groups to find that there are 6 altogether, so 6 is the whole.
Bring their attention back to the number bond and explicitly connect each representation. The 2 represents one part, the 4 represents the other part, and the 6 represents the whole created when those two parts are combined. Whether those quantities started as dots on a domino, dots on dice, or written number cards, the number bond helps children organize the quantities and see the relationship between them.
As you repeat the activity with different dominoes, dice rolls, or number card combinations, children begin to discover that the same whole can be composed of different parts. A whole of 6 might be made from 2 and 4, but it could also be made from 1 and 5 or 3 and 3. This is the beginning of flexible number sense. Children are learning that numbers aren’t isolated values, they can be composed, decomposed, and related to other numbers in different ways.
At this stage, continue using the visual or concrete support for as long as your child needs it. The goal isn’t to get them to stop counting the dots or put away the manipulatives as quickly as possible. Understanding the relationship between the parts and the whole is the goal.

Learning Goal: I can use two parts to find the whole and represent the number bond as an addition equation.
At the Apply level, children begin using what they know about part-part-whole relationships to solve problems more independently. Whether they’re working with dominoes, dice, number cards, or counting cube cards, the goal is to use their understanding of how numbers relate rather than simply counting and recording quantities.
With the Dominoes Mat, children count or recognize the quantity on each half of the domino and record the two parts. With the Dice Mat, they roll two dice and use each die as one part. With the Cut + Paste Number Cards Mat, they choose two written numbers and record them as the parts. In each of these versions, children are given or generate the two parts and use those parts to determine the whole.
At this level, instead of immediately counting every dot or building both quantities with manipulatives, encourage children to use an addition strategy to determine the whole. They may still need to count, and that’s okay. As their number sense develops, however, you may notice their strategies becoming more efficient. A child working with 5 and 3 might recognize 5 without counting each individual object and then count on three more: 6, 7, 8. Eventually, familiar combinations may become automatic.
Once they determine the whole, connect the completed number bond to a written addition equation. If the two parts are 5 and 3 and the whole is 8, show how that same relationship can be represented as 5 + 3 = 8. The number bond and equation show the same mathematical relationship in two different ways.
Then, use the Number Bond Counting Cube Cards to reverse the thinking. Instead of starting with two parts and finding the whole, children begin with a completed counting cube tower. They count all of the cubes first to determine the whole, then break that whole apart by counting how many cubes there are of each color. For example, a tower of 8 cubes might contain 5 blue cubes and 3 orange cubes. Children record 8 as the whole and then 5 and 3 as its two parts. This reinforces that if two parts can be composed to create a whole, a whole can also be decomposed back into its parts.
To extend the learning even further, move beyond the cards and build a tower using cubes of the same color. Start with a whole, such as a tower of 6 cubes, and challenge your child to find different ways to break it apart. They might separate the tower into 3 and 3, reconnect the same 6 cubes and break it into 4 and 2, then try 5 and 1. Record each combination as a new number bond while keeping the whole at 6. Without the different colors visually defining the parts for them, children have to decide how to decompose the whole themselves.
This is an important next step in developing flexible number sense because children begin to see that one whole can be composed of many different combinations of parts. 8 isn’t only 5 and 3, it can also be 4 and 4, 6 and 2, and 7 and 1. You can even connect each number bond to its corresponding addition equation to show that different equations can have the same sum.
Moving between finding the whole, decomposing a whole into given parts, and independently finding multiple ways to decompose the same whole gives children a much deeper understanding of number relationships. They aren’t just learning how to find an answer, they’re learning how numbers can be composed and decomposed in flexible ways, laying important groundwork for addition, subtraction, fact fluency, and mental math.
How to Teach Number Bonds: From Quantities to Equations
When introducing the activities, I recommend using an I Do, We Do, You Do approach rather than handing your child the page and asking them to figure it out independently.
Start by modeling one number bond yourself using whichever version you’ve chosen. With the Dominoes Mat, place a domino on the mat, count the dots on each half, and record the two quantities as the parts. With the Dice Mat, roll two dice, count each quantity, and record the parts. With the Cut + Paste Number Cards Mat, choose two cards, identify the numerals, glue them into the squares, and record them as the parts. When modeling that first number bond, use a concrete manipulative like counting cubes or counters to physically build each quantity and combine the two groups. Talk through your thinking as you work: “I have 3 as one part and 4 as my other part. I can build 3 cubes and 4 cubes. When I put those two parts together, I have 7 altogether. Seven is my whole.” Giving children something they can physically see and manipulate helps make the relationship between the parts and whole concrete before expecting them to work with the number bond more abstractly.
Next, complete a number bond together. Let your child take over pieces of the process while you provide support where needed. Finally, give them a new domino, let them roll the dice, or have them choose two new number cards and try the process independently.
As children become more comfortable with traditional number bonds, you can also introduce the Counting Cube Cards to reverse the thinking. This time, children start with the whole by counting all of the cubes in the tower. Then, they separate that whole into two parts by counting how many cubes there are of each color. Modeling both directions helps children understand that numbers can be composed to make a whole and decomposed into smaller parts.
The important thing is that you don’t have to teach every skill at once. If your child is working at the Recognize level, focus on identifying quantities or numerals and representing them with written numbers. At the Understand level, focus your conversations on what the parts and whole represent and how they relate. At the Apply level, encourage children to use addition strategies, connect number bonds to equations, and explore reverse number bonds by starting with the whole and finding its parts.
The materials may change, but the progression stays the same: Recognize → Understand → Apply. As their understanding grows, so does the mathematical thinking you ask them to do.
How to Know Where to Start
You don’t have to determine your starting point based solely on your child’s age or grade. Instead, watch what happens as they work with the dominoes, dice, number cards, or Counting Cube Cards and pay attention to what they can do independently versus where they need support.
If your child is still working on counting the dots accurately, recognizing written numerals, or connecting a quantity to the numeral that represents it, spend more time at the Recognize level. At this level, the dominoes and dice are especially helpful because children can see the quantities they’re counting, while the number cards give them practice recognizing those same numbers in different forms.
If your child can identify and represent the numbers but doesn’t yet understand what the two parts mean or how they relate to the whole, focus on the Understand level. Use the visual quantities on the dominoes and dice or bring in manipulatives with the number cards so they can physically see that two separate quantities can be combined to create one whole.
If your child can explain that two parts combine to make a whole, they’re ready to move into the Apply level. Encourage them to use more efficient addition strategies, connect completed number bonds to written equations, and eventually use the Counting Cube Cards to reverse the process, starting with the whole and determining its two parts. This helps children explore number relationships in both directions and strengthens their understanding of composing and decomposing numbers.
The levels don’t need to be rigid. Your child might recognize some quantities immediately but need to count others. They might solve 2 + 2 mentally but need manipulatives for 6 + 4. They may be ready to find the whole independently but still need support when working backward to find the parts. That doesn’t mean they’ve moved backward, it simply shows you what support they need for that particular problem.
The goal isn’t to move through Recognize → Understand → Apply as quickly as possible. It’s to make sure the understanding underneath the math is strong enough to support what comes next.
Keep the Number Learning Going
If your child needs additional practice at the Recognize level, Cardboard Box Roll and Cover is a great way to reinforce number recognition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, and connecting quantities to numerals. Children roll a giant cardboard die, count the dots on the side it lands on, and then find and cover the matching written numeral on a large number mat with a sticky note. Each roll gives children another opportunity to move from a visual quantity to a written number. They see the dots, count how many there are, and connect that amount to the numeral that represents it. Strengthening that foundational connection makes it easier for children to work with the written numbers they encounter in number bonds later.
Once your child is ready to build on the skills practiced through number bonds, continue the progression with Sticky Note Addition. This activity moves children further into the Apply level by transitioning from the visual support of number bonds to solving written addition equations. Write different addition equations on sticky notes and scatter them around the house for your child to find. As they collect each one, they solve the equation and match the sticky note to the corresponding sum on a large piece of paper. Children get repeated practice with addition facts, fact fluency, number relationships, and flexible thinking, including seeing how different equations can result in the same sum. It’s a natural next step because the mathematical idea hasn’t changed. They’re still working with two parts that combine to make a whole. The representation has simply become more abstract.

Building Addition from the Ground Up
Addition makes more sense when children understand the number relationships behind the equations they’re solving. Number bonds give children a visual way to see those relationships: two parts can be combined to create a whole, and a whole can be broken apart into its parts.
With these Number Bond activities, that understanding can grow gradually. At the Recognize level, children identify quantities and numerals and connect what they see to the written number that represents it. At the Understand level, they discover that those numbers represent separate quantities and begin to see how two parts work together to create a whole. At the Apply level, they use those relationships to solve addition problems, connect number bonds to written equations, and even reverse the process by starting with a whole and decomposing it into parts.
The different mats provide multiple ways to explore the same mathematical ideas. Dominoes and dice give children visual quantities they can count, number cards move them toward working with abstract numerals, and the Counting Cube Cards challenge them to reverse their thinking by starting with the whole and finding the parts.
That progression, from recognizing numbers and quantities, to understanding part-part-whole relationships, to applying that understanding in multiple ways, is what builds flexible number sense instead of simply teaching children to memorize answers.
And that’s the goal: not to rush toward equations, but to build the understanding that makes those equations actually mean something. The materials may change and the thinking may grow, but the relationship stays the same: parts and wholes are connected.
