If you’ve landed here, you’re ready to tackle one area of your home as part of the 500 Item Purge.
This simple decluttering challenge is all about letting go of the things that no longer serve your family, one small decision at a time. Despite the name, it’s not really about reaching 500 items, it’s about building momentum and creating a home that’s easier to clean, organize, and enjoy. If you’re new to the challenge, be sure to read the 500 Item Purge Overview first, where I’ll explain the philosophy behind the purge, share the benefits of owning less, and give you access to my free Decluttering Guide to help you confidently decide what stays and what goes. Then come back here, and let’s tackle this room together.
Kids’ Room Purge: Creating a Space They Can Enjoy
Kids’ bedrooms have a funny way of becoming a catch-all for everything that doesn’t quite have a home. Clothes pile up, treasures collect on every surface, books stack beside the bed, and before long, the room starts feeling more overwhelming than restful.
Some clutter is obvious, clothes that no longer fit, broken toys, and worn-out books. Other items are easier to overlook: stuffed animals that haven’t been touched in years, random treasures tucked into drawers, duplicate blankets, and decorations they’ve simply outgrown.
As I worked through my girls’ rooms, I kept asking myself one simple question: “Does this still have a purpose in this room?” If the answer was no, it went into the donation box, trash, or recycling. Little by little, the rooms became easier to tidy, bedtime routines felt calmer, and everything had a place.
As you work through your own kids’ rooms, don’t underestimate the impact of clearing out the little things. One broken toy, one stack of old artwork, or one drawer of forgotten treasures might not seem like much, but together they create a lot of unnecessary clutter.
The goal isn’t to create a perfectly decorated bedroom. It’s to create a space where your child can rest, play, and easily take ownership of keeping it tidy. ✌🏼
