If you’ve landed here, you’re ready to tackle one area of your home as part of the 500 Item Purge.
This simple decluttering challenge is all about letting go of the things that no longer serve your family, one small decision at a time. Despite the name, it’s not really about reaching 500 items, it’s about building momentum and creating a home that’s easier to clean, organize, and enjoy. If you’re new to the challenge, be sure to read the 500 Item Purge Overview first, where I’ll explain the philosophy behind the purge, share the benefits of owning less, and give you access to my free Decluttering Guide to help you confidently decide what stays and what goes. Then come back here, and let’s tackle this room together.
Toy Attic Purge: Let Someone Else Enjoy It
Toy attics tend to become museums of childhood. We save things because they’re sentimental, because a younger sibling might use them someday, or because it feels wasteful to let them go. Before long, bins are stacked floor to ceiling with toys no one has touched in years.
Some clutter is obvious, broken toys, missing pieces, and worn-out baby gear. Other items are harder to part with: toys your children have clearly outgrown, duplicate baby equipment, and bins you’ve been storing “just in case.”
As I worked through our toy attic, I kept asking myself one simple question: “Is this serving our family right now?” If the answer was no, it went into the donation pile. Little by little, the attic became less of a storage unit and more of a place that actually served our family.
As you work through your own toy storage, remember that another child can enjoy these toys long before they lose their usefulness. Holding onto everything “just in case” often means no one gets to enjoy it.
The goal isn’t to save every memory. It’s to make room for the memories you’re making right now. ✌🏼
