If you’ve landed here, you’re ready to tackle one area of your home as part of the 500 Item Purge.
This simple decluttering challenge is all about letting go of the things that no longer serve your family, one small decision at a time. Despite the name, it’s not really about reaching 500 items, it’s about building momentum and creating a home that’s easier to clean, organize, and enjoy. If you’re new to the challenge, be sure to read the 500 Item Purge Overview first, where I’ll explain the philosophy behind the purge, share the benefits of owning less, and give you access to my free Decluttering Guide to help you confidently decide what stays and what goes. Then come back here, and let’s tackle this room together.
Playroom Purge: Where Toys Go to Multiply
If there’s one room that seems to collect clutter overnight, it’s the playroom. Between birthdays, holidays, hand-me-downs, and those “I just thought they’d love this” purchases, toys have a way of multiplying faster than we ever expect. Before long, bins are overflowing, shelves are packed, and somehow your kids still say they have nothing to play with.
Some clutter is obvious, broken toys, puzzles with missing pieces, dried-up markers, and games with half the parts missing. Other items are sneakier: toys your kids have quietly outgrown, duplicates of the same thing, and well-intentioned gifts that never really became favorites.
As I worked through our playroom, I kept asking myself one simple question: “Is this toy still bringing value to our family?” If the answer was no, it went into the donation box, trash, or recycling. Little by little, the shelves became easier to use, cleanup became faster, and the toys that remained actually got played with.
As you work through your own playroom, don’t overlook the little things like broken crayons, dried-up play dough, random Happy Meal toys, party favors, or missing game pieces. Those small items add up faster than you think.
The goal isn’t to have a playroom with fewer toys just for the sake of owning less. It’s to create a space where your kids can actually find, enjoy, and care for the toys they love. And that’s a win for everyone. ✌🏼
