Counting Cube Towers: Building Number Sense Through Hands-On Math

HOW TO TEACH NUMBER SENSE: FROM COUNTING TO COMPUTING
Recognizing a number and understanding what that number actually represents are two different skills. A child might look at the numeral 6 and immediately tell you its name, but can they build a group of exactly six objects? Can they compare that group to a group of four? Can they figure out how many more six is than four, or what happens when those two quantities are combined?
Those connections are what begin turning number recognition into number sense, and they’re exactly what Counting Cube Towers is designed to help children explore.
Counting Cube Towers is a simple, hands-on math activity that pairs written numerals with physical quantities using counting cubes. Each activity card gives your child two or three numbers paired with different colored cubes. Their job is to identify each number and build a tower using the corresponding number of cubes in that color.
But building the towers is really just the starting point. Just like with Flip & Find, the same activity can be used differently depending on what your child is currently learning. You can adjust the complexity by choosing between 2-Color and 3-Color Cards, while also changing the depth of learning through the developmental progression of Recognize → Understand → Apply.
The resource stays familiar. The challenge and the thinking can grow with your child.
The Learning Behind Counting Cube Towers
When a child sees the numeral 5 and successfully builds a tower of five cubes, there’s actually a lot happening. First, they have to recognize the numeral. Then they need to understand that the numeral represents a specific quantity. As they build, they have to count one cube for each number word, stop when they reach the correct amount, and understand that the completed tower represents a total quantity of five.
Once those individual quantities are built, children can begin exploring how they relate to one another. A tower of six and a tower of four are no longer just two groups of cubes. Your child can physically see that six is greater than four, discover that six is two more than four, or combine the towers to see that six and four make ten.
That’s why this activity can support much more than counting practice. It gives children a concrete way to move from recognizing numbers, to understanding their value, to applying that understanding through early mathematical thinking.
RECOGNIZE: Number Recognition
Learning Goal: I can recognize and name written numbers.
At the Recognize step, start by helping your child understand the information on the card before they begin building. Have them look at each color and identify the numeral paired with it. If the card shows 4 beside a red cube and 7 beside an orange cube, your child first recognizes that they need four red cubes and seven orange cubes.
From there, have them sort or gather the counting cubes by color. This gives each number a clear job: 4 tells me how many red cubes I need, and 7 tells me how many orange cubes I need. Once the colors are separated, your child can count the correct quantity for each one and begin building the corresponding towers.
At this developmental step, the primary focus is number recognition and connecting each numeral to its assigned color. The numbers are presented independently rather than in a predictable counting sequence, requiring children to recognize each written numeral and keep track of which color it belongs to.
And if your child doesn’t know one of the numbers? Tell them. The goal is to teach, not quiz. You might say, “This is 7, so we need seven orange cubes. Let’s find our orange cubes and count them together.” Your child is hearing the number name, seeing the written numeral, identifying the correct color, and preparing to build the quantity it represents.
As number recognition becomes more automatic, gradually step back and allow your child to identify the number needed for each color, sort their cubes, and begin counting independently. You can use either the 2-Color or 3-Color Cards during this step. Moving to a 3-Color Card adds an extra challenge by asking your child to recognize and keep track of three number-and-color pairings instead of two.
UNDERSTAND: One-to-One Correspondence
Learning Goal: I understand that a number represents a specific quantity.
Recognizing the numeral 5 is one skill. Understanding that 5 represents five actual objects is another. This is where Counting Cube Towers really shines because children can physically build the quantity represented by each numeral.
If the card shows 5 beside a blue cube, your child finds the blue cubes and builds a tower containing exactly five. As they build, encourage them to add one cube at a time while counting: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5.” This strengthens one-to-one correspondence, or the understanding that each object being counted receives one, and only one, number word.
Physically picking up and connecting each cube makes counting concrete. Young children may otherwise count faster than they move through a group, skip an object, count the same object twice, or continue reciting numbers after they’ve run out of objects. Building a tower gives each number word a physical action and object to go with it.
Once the tower is complete, ask, “How many cubes are in your tower?” We want children to understand that the final number they counted represents the total amount in the group. This understanding of total quantity, or cardinality, is another important part of developing number sense.
Then connect the quantity back to the numeral on the card: “This is the number 5, and your tower has five cubes.” Your child is making the connection between the written numeral, spoken number name, and physical quantity.
The 3-Color Cards can increase the challenge during this step without changing the skill being practiced. Instead of accurately building two quantities, your child now has to build and keep track of three. They’re still working on counting and number value, there’s simply more information to manage.
APPLY: Comparing, Combining + Separating Quantities
Learning Goal: I can use what I know about numbers and quantities to solve problems.
Once your child can confidently build the towers, don’t take them apart just yet. Those completed towers are now visual math tools that can be used to explore comparison, addition, subtraction, and number relationships.
With a 2-Color Card, start by placing the completed towers next to one another. Ask, “Which tower has more? Which has fewer?” Because every cube is the same size, your child can physically see the difference between the two quantities. You can then take the thinking further by asking, “How many more cubes does this tower have?” Line the towers up and compare them cube by cube so the unmatched cubes make the difference visible.
The same two towers can become a simple addition problem. If your child builds a tower of four and a tower of three, ask, “How many cubes would we have if we put these together?” Let them combine the cubes and count the total to discover that 4 + 3 = 7. Instead of memorizing an equation, they’re physically seeing that addition means combining quantities.
You can explore subtraction in a similar way. If the towers represent 7 and 3, your child can compare them to determine the difference, or you can begin with the tower of seven and physically remove three cubes. Counting what remains helps make the meaning of 7 – 3 = 4 visible.
The 3-Color Cards open up even more ways to apply what your child knows. Have them arrange all three towers from least to greatest or greatest to least. Ask which represents the largest or smallest quantity. Compare two towers while leaving the third out, or combine all three to explore addition with three quantities.
You can even ask questions like, “What happens if we put these two towers together? Is that more or less than the third tower?” The goal isn’t necessarily to introduce formal equations every time. It’s to encourage your child to notice relationships between quantities and use what they know to answer mathematical questions.
And don’t be in a hurry to take the cubes away. Using manipulatives doesn’t make the math less advanced. The cubes allow children to see and physically manipulate the math they’re doing, helping build the concrete understanding they’ll eventually use to solve those same problems abstractly.
Two Ways to Grow the Activity
One of the things I love most about Counting Cube Towers is that you can adjust the activity in two different ways.
You can increase the complexity of the card by moving from two towers to three. Or you can increase the depth of the learning by changing what you ask your child to do with the quantities they’ve built.
Those two progressions don’t have to happen at the same time.
A child using a 3-Color Card might still be working primarily on Recognize and Understand skills—identifying three numerals and accurately building their quantities. Meanwhile, another child could use a simpler 2-Color Card to Applytheir understanding by comparing the towers, finding the difference, or adding the two quantities together.
More towers don’t automatically mean more advanced math. The number of towers changes the complexity. What your child does with those towers changes the depth of the learning.
That distinction gives you a lot of flexibility to meet your child exactly where they are.
How to Know Where to Start
Don’t choose where to begin based solely on your child’s age or grade. Start with what they can do confidently and independently.
If your child is still learning to identify written numerals, focus on Recognize and begin with the 2-Color Cards so there’s less information to manage at once. If they recognize the numbers but are still developing accurate counting, one-to-one correspondence, or their understanding of quantity, spend more time in Understand. Once they can independently identify a numeral and accurately build its corresponding quantity, begin adding opportunities to Apply what they know through comparing, combining, and separating the towers.
You can adjust the card choice independently. Maybe your child can confidently recognize and build three quantities, so the 3-Color Cards are a great fit, but they’re not ready for addition yet. Or perhaps your child is beginning to add and subtract but benefits from working with only two towers at a time. In that case, the 2-Color Cards may actually make it easier for them to focus on the more challenging mathematical thinking.
These developmental steps aren’t rigid, either. Your child might independently build towers through five but need support with larger quantities. They might easily compare which tower has more but need manipulatives to determine how many more. They may even solve some addition problems mentally while needing to physically build others.
That’s all useful information about what your child understands. The goal isn’t to race through the cards or developmental steps. It’s to recognize where your child is now and give them the right amount of challenge to keep building from there.
How to Teach Counting Cube Towers
When introducing Counting Cube Towers for the first time, keep the focus on learning how the activity works. Cut apart the cards, grab your counting cubes, and choose a 2-Color Card to complete together. I like using an I Do, We Do, You Do approach so children can see exactly what they’re supposed to do before being expected to complete it independently.
You might model the first tower by saying, “I see the number 4 next to a red cube, so I need four red cubes. I’m going to add one cube at a time while I count: 1, 2, 3, 4. I have four cubes, so my tower is finished.” Build the next tower together, then let your child try another card independently.
Once the routine is familiar, you can decide how you want to challenge them that day. Maybe you stick with 2-Color Cards but add a comparison question at the end. Maybe you move to a 3-Color Card while continuing to focus only on accurate counting. Or maybe you pull out a familiar 2-Color Card specifically to practice addition.
You don’t need to use every possible extension each time. Choose one intentional learning focus and let the activity support it. Five or ten focused minutes can be much more meaningful than trying to squeeze number recognition, counting, comparison, addition, and subtraction into one sitting.
Keep the Number Learning Going
Once your child is ready to build on the skills practiced through Counting Cube Towers, you can continue the progression with other hands-on math activities. One Simple Activity, So Many Ways to Build Number Sense
The goal of early math isn’t just learning to count higher, it’s helping children understand what those numbers actually mean. They need opportunities to connect numerals to quantities, count accurately using one-to-one correspondence, compare amounts, and eventually explore how quantities can be combined and separated.
That’s the progression I want Counting Cube Towers to support: recognize it, understand it, and apply it. The 2-Color and 3-Color Cards give you an easy way to adjust the complexity, while the way you use the completed towers allows the learning to grow right alongside your child.
Sometimes building stronger math skills doesn’t require a brand-new activity. It just requires finding new ways to learn from the one already in front of you.
