Unstucking My Pantry: Creating Home Systems That Work for You
Our pantry wasn’t just messy, it was making everyday life harder. Here’s how I turned a stuck space into a simple, functional system designed to make grocery shopping, cooking, and kids’ independence easier. Because the goal isn’t a perfectly organized home. It’s creating systems that work for you, reduce mental load, and give you more capacity for the things that matter.

How I Organized Our Pantry to Work for Our Family
There are spaces in our homes that are messy, and then there are spaces that are stuck. A messy space might just need to be cleaned up or reset. A stuck space is different because it actively makes everyday life harder. Maybe putting away laundry takes forever because the drawers are too full, you’re constantly buying things you already have because you can’t see them, or your kids need your help with something they could otherwise do independently. None of these are huge problems on their own, but when you’re dealing with the same little inefficiencies day after day, they start taking up a surprising amount of your time, energy, and mental capacity.
That’s the whole idea behind my Unstuck My Home series. I’m not trying to create a perfectly organized house or make every cabinet look Pinterest-worthy. I’m identifying the spaces and systems that create unnecessary work and changing them so they better support the way our family actually lives. Your home should work for you, not against you.
Why Our Pantry Wasn’t Working
For us, one of those stuck spaces was our pantry. It technically worked, but everything involving it was harder than it needed to be. I couldn’t easily see what we had while grocery shopping, cooking meant digging for ingredients, and my kids couldn’t always independently find or reach what they needed.
The problem wasn’t a lack of space, we just weren’t using it efficiently. Boxes, bags, pouches, and half-empty packages had turned the pantry into a giant game of Tetris, leaving wasted space and no clear home for anything. So instead of continually rearranging the same setup, I decided to create a system that used our space better, gave everything a home, and actually worked for our family.
CREATING A SYSTEM THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
Once I knew why our pantry wasn’t working, I could stop rearranging and start solving the actual problems. The goal was simple: use our space more efficiently, give everything a home, and make everyday tasks like grocery shopping, cooking, and grabbing snacks easier. Here’s how I broke it down into three simple steps.
STEP 1: EMPTY, INVENTORY & PURGE
First, everything came out. I checked expiration dates, tossed what we weren’t going to use, combined duplicates, and took inventory of what was left. This gave me a much better picture of what we actually keep on hand and the natural categories our pantry needed to hold.
I also paid attention to what hadn’t been working, what was constantly getting lost, what I accidentally bought duplicates of, and what needed to be more accessible for cooking or for my kids. Before deciding where everything should go, I needed to know what our pantry actually needed to hold and how we needed to use it.
STEP 2: MEASURE THE SPACE & FIND CONTAINERS THAT FIT
Next came the part that made the biggest difference: measuring. Instead of buying organizers and hoping they worked, I measured the height, width, and depth of our shelves and chose containers that would make the most of that specific space. Food packaging comes in every shape and size, and trying to fit it all together had basically turned our pantry into a giant game of Tetris. Containers that actually fit our shelves allowed us to use the space more efficiently, take advantage of vertical space, and fit more without everything feeling crammed together.
I wasn’t buying containers just to make the pantry look pretty, the containers were part of the system. I also considered how we use each category when deciding where it should live. Kids’ foods needed to be within reach, frequently used ingredients needed convenient spots, and backstock needed to be easy to check before grocery shopping. Everything needed a home, and that home needed to make sense for how we actually use the pantry.
STEP 3: FILL, ORGANIZE & WATCH THE EFFICIENCY COME TO LIFE
Then came the satisfying part: putting everything back. Once I filled the containers and assigned each category a designated home, I could immediately see how much more efficiently we were using the exact same space. Snacks were contained, staples fit the shelves, backstock was visible, and those awkward gaps between mismatched packages were finally being put to use.
But the biggest difference wasn’t how the pantry looked, it was how it worked. I can quickly see what we need before grocery shopping, find ingredients while cooking, and my kids can independently grab what they need. When groceries come home, I’m not figuring out where to shove everything because there’s already a home for it. Instead of constantly reorganizing the pantry, I’m simply maintaining a system that’s already been decided.
THE GOAL: GIVE EVERYTHING A HOME
If I had to boil this entire pantry project down to one thing, it would be this: give everything a home. Not a random open spot on a shelf, but an intentional place based on what it is, how often you use it, and who needs to access it.
Once those decisions are made, everything gets easier, putting groceries away, making a shopping list, cooking, and giving kids more independence. The pantry won’t stay perfectly organized all the time, and that’s not the goal.
The goal is a system that’s easy to reset because everything already has somewhere to go.
THE METHOD BEHIND UNSTUCK MY HOME
This pantry makeover is one example of the bigger idea behind my Unstuck My Home series: finding the parts of our homes that make everyday life harder than it needs to be and creating practical systems to fix them.
